Notice that the topic of the discussion in Luke 17:20-37 is the Second Coming!

"And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you. And he said unto the disciples, The days will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not see it." Luke 17:20-22

Notice it says "when the kingdom of God should come" and "desire to see one of the days of the Son of man" both of which hint at the Second Coming... the coming of God's kingdom and the return of Christ.

First notice that Matthew 24:21-29 is a unit all dealing with the "great tribulation" (vss. 21 & 29)...

"For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened. Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before. Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together. Immediately after the tribulation of those days..."

Now notice that Matthew is paralleled by Luke...

"And they shall say to you, See here; or, see there: go not after them, nor follow them. For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day." Luke 17:23,24

[Matthew says: "Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. ... Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert (=here?); go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers (=there?); believe it not. For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be."]

"... And he said unto them, Wheresoever the body is, thither will the eagles be gathered together." Luke 17:37

[Matthew says: "For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together."]

First notice that Matthew 24:37-41 is a unit all dealing with Noah's Flood.

"But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left. [vss. 42,43] Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up."

Notice that the Flood took away the wicked and that one of each of the pairs... the "two ... in the field" and the "two women ... grinding at the mill"... is taken, the similar language indicating that all of these verses are talking about the self-same event... Noah's flood!

Now notice that Matthew is paralleled by Luke...

"And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. 27 They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all." Luke 17:26,27

[Matthew says: "But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be."]

"I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left. Two women shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left." Luke 17:34-36

[Matthew says: "Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left."]

First notice Matthew 24:15-20 (which speaks of "the abomination of desolation"), specifically on verses 17,18

"When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains: [vss. 17,18] Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes. [End vss.] And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:"

Now notice that Matthew is paralleled by Luke...

"In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back." Luke 17:31

Lastly, notice that Luke surrounds this verse with a "Lot" wrapper.

"Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. ... In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back. Remember Lot’s wife." Luke 17:28-32
